NEC and Siemens in £1bn mobile venture

NEWS NEC and Siemens have formed a joint venture to develop third generation UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) mobile phone technologies. The company - called Mobisphere - will receive around £1bn for research and development over the next ten years. It will focus on the radio infrastructure - such as transceiver stations, radio network controllers and maintenance centres - rather than mobile handsets. Both companies will continue to market their own handset technologies. Mobisphere will combine the Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD). Siemens' Hans Krafka will take on the role of managing director.
