NEWS Orange has announced an all-British consortium of technology companies to construct its videophone; it also confirmed it has decided to use Microsoft's Windows CE operating system to run the device. The phone, yet to be formally titled, will be able to send and receive video images, as well as behave like a standard PDA with Internet access and email. It will work over a second generation network using high-speed circuit switch data technology. Technology providers for the phone include Cambridge Consultants, Motion Media, NMI and the University of Strathclyde. Electronics manufacturer, Celestica, will design and fabricate the hardware. The University of Strathclyde has developed the compression technology that enables images to be put in a format to be transmitted. Video images will be transmitted at a rate of 12 frames per second A spokesman for Orange said the company had been in discussion with a number of manufacturers but none were willing or able to help them to develop the phone. The phone is slated for launch in the spring of next year, with a consumer price of around £500.
