Patent Office backs Xerox in 3Com Palm dispute

By John Oates, 11 January 2000 16:36

NEWS Xerox has won the support of the Patent Office in its legal battle against 3Com for patent violation of the handwriting recognition software used in the PalmPilot. Xerox claims 3Com used its 'unistroke' technology in its Palm software. Xerox originally sued US Robotics before it was taken over by 3Com. The company said in a statement that it expects 'active litigation' to resume although it will consider an out of court settlement. 3Com is in the process of floating off part of its Palm arm.
