NEWS The UK's National Computing Centre (NCC), is predicting wireless and mobile computing will be the most important technology issue of the next 12 months. In its report on the key themes of 2000, the association claimed new standards and technical enhancements will make wireless mobile computing more versatile and viable than ever before. A spokesman for NCC said ecommerce was last year's big topic, now the organisation "feels mobile computing will ultimately have a significant effect on IT users". "It will mean new ways of working, new investments and new infrastructures, as well as greater access to communications and greater access to data," he said, "What was originally a high-cost item has become all pervasive." Other topics that NCC predicts will affect the IT industry this year include legal minefields on the Internet, Storage Area Networks, ebusiness security, the changing role of the IT professional, and total outsourcing - the creation of virtual IS departments. NCC's report, 'Thirteen Themes for the Year 2000' is free to NCC members. For more information see http://www.ncc.co.uk .
