Orange fights m-commerce regulation

By Joey Gardiner, 22 February 2000 17:59

NEWS Orange is to challenge the government over its proposals to regulate ecommerce from foreign countries, according to a report in the Financial Times. The mobile operator is reportedly worried the regulations over distance selling will constrict mobile commerce (m-commerce) which is vital if the UK is to bridge the gap with the US on the Internet. At present, if a consumer buys from a foreign Web site the consumer regulations of the country of the retailer apply. To help protect consumers, the government is proposing that retailers must provide customers with a large amount of consumer regulation information or the sales contract is void. Orange is said to be concerned this information would be impossible to transmit over the mobile phone because of the small size of the screen.
