Gateway picks Transmeta ahead of chip giants

By Dominic Maher, 31 May 2000 15:56

NEWS Gateway has snubbed Intel and AMD and chosen Transmeta to provide the chips for its forthcoming range of Internet Appliances (IAs). Transmeta's Crusoe processor promises an extended battery life, a smaller size and has lower operating temperatures than traditional processors. Transmeta will also be providing its Mobile Linux as the operating system for the product range. Andrew Brown, senior research analyst at IDC, said: "Gateway has been swapping between AMD and Intel and are not quite sure what they want but whether they stick with it or others follow we'll have to wait and see." Brown expects Transmeta to have a significant impact on the processor market but not for a couple of years.
