BT results suggest UK mobile users total 30 million

NEWS BT Cellnet has released its latest set of user figures, confirming the total number of UK mobile phone users is likely to top 30 million. With mobile operators Vodafone and One2One still to report, all the signs point to the 30 million-user milestone, which will mean, for the first time, more than half of the UK population are using mobile phones. BT Cellnet alone reported 670,000 new customers in the last three months, an increase of nine per cent on the previous quarter, taking its total customer base to 8.1 million. Yesterday Orange announced it signed up 1.2m customers over the same period, taking its total to 7.2 million users. Phoebe Leet, industry analyst for Dataquest, said: "These results show Orange doing extremely well compared to BT, despite all of BT Cellnet's promotions, but we will have to wait to see the other results to see how good those figures really are."
