US tightens regulations on mobile radiation emissions

By Julian Goldsmith, 18 July 2000 12:50

NEWS Mobile phone manufacturers will be obliged to carry radiation emissions information in the US from August. The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association confirmed yesterday that all new handsets submitted for certification will have to carry such information in three to six months after the August ratification of the regulation. Handset makers have been required to submit data on the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) - or rate of radiation emissions - of their products to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), but there have been no regulations in place to advise customers on the results. In future, manufacturers will be obliged to print directions to customers on how to get their phone's SAR from the FCC.
