Dutch 3G auction is falling short of expectations

NEWS The battle for third generation UMTS mobile licences in the Netherlands resumes this week with the end of last week seeing a 40 per cent jump in bids. Bidding has so far reached E2.3bn (£1.4bn) but this is still only a quarter of the total Dutch Finance minister Gerrit Zalm hopes to raise from the auction. The leaders so far are Libertel, majority owned by Vodafone Airtouch, who has bid E595.36m (£366.62m) for licence A KPN Telecom Unit KPN Mobile bid E593m (£365m) for licence B while 3G Blue, VersaTel and Dutchtone currently have the highest bids for the remaining three licences. The auction has been running for 12 days and reached 297 rounds. The UMTS auction in the UK raised £22.5bn in 150 rounds over three weeks.
