German UMTS licence bidding begins

NEWS Bidding for Germany's UMTS licences began this morning in Mayence with a bid from MobilCom and France Telecom leading the way. The DM501m (£157m) bid from the joint venture was swiftly followed by a DM150m (£47m) offer from Mannesmann and Vodafone. The bidders include: Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile; Group 3G - a joint venture with Sonera and Telefonica; consortium Auditorium, lead by KPN, Hutchison and E-Plus; Mannesmann/Vodafone; Mobilcom/France Telecom and Debitel Multimedia/Swisscom. The German government hopes to raise between E10 and E60bn (£6.2bn and £37.2bn) from the auction process.
