No place for WAP in UK businesses

UK businesses are steering clear of WAP and refusing to make inroads into the m-commerce sector due to low consumer interest, a shortage of skills and a lack of confidence in the fledgling technology.

NEWS An exclusive preview of a survey given to silicon.com by research house, Rhetorik, reveals that 42 per cent of UK businesses have no plans to implement m-commerce into their businesses, while only three per cent of UK businesses offer WAP support for external websites. Claire Cook, research manager at Rhetorik, said: "The primary concern is the lack of maturity of the product and of the technologies available. Two-thirds of the people we spoke to said this is stopping them from implementing WAP technology." Finding the right people to do the job is also a problem. Cook added: "A major concern is resources. Where are businesses going to get the expertise to implement these technologies? They are struggling to implement ecommerce strategies and find the resources for that, let alone m-commerce." Cook concluded that businesses are seeing so few customers using WAP technology they are fast coming to the conclusion they don't need it in their infrastructure. She said: "Companies don't see the business need when very few customers are using the technology."
