Nokia unveils next generation of mobile products

Nokia has announced a wide range of products and services aimed at maximising revenue for mobile operators as they build out third-generation, UMTS networks.

NEWS Speaking at the UMTS2000 event in Barcelona, Ilkka Pukkila, director of strategic 3G marketing at Nokia, said operators must master their next-generation infrastructure ahead of applications, terminals and value-added services. The Finnish communications equipment supplier will now offer the Nokia mPlatform Solution, which aims to help operators and service providers roll out mobile internet services across all types of networks. The company also touted its technology for location-based services, which comes under the brand names mPosition and mCatch. This so-called "where-ware" will also work with GSM upgrades using GPRS and EDGE ahead of full 3G network construction. In addition, the company has beefed up its base station portfolio with offerings that should especially help European operators moving to the W-CDMA 3G standard, but only with frequency allocations measured in 10MHz bands. Also on the menu were an IP-RAN (Radio Access Network) resource management product and Nokia NetAct network management software. Ilkka said the aim is to help operators increase incremental revenues and at the same time bring down costs.
