Vivendi belatedly enters 'over-priced' French 3G auction

Vivendi's mobile phone division, SFR, has decided it will bid for a French UMTS licence after all, only one day before the deadline for entrance closes.

NEWS The news comes two days after Telefonica and Suez Lyonnaise withdrew from the bidding process and Bouygues Telecom claimed it was having second thoughts. SFR's entry into the UMTS arena means there are now only two confirmed contenders for the four French licences. France Telecom has already said it will pay the FFr32.5bn (£3.2bn) beauty contest entrance fee. Operators have complained that the entry fee is too high. Martin Bouygues, CEO at Bouygues Telecom, has filed an official complaint to the European Commission to protest against the licence price and process of distribution.
