iMode boasts 20 millionth subscriber

Japanese telco NTT DoCoMo is claiming that subscriber numbers to its iMode service have broken the 20 million mark within only two years of operation.

NEWS Around 60 per cent of DoCoMo's mobile phone users have opted for iMode - equating to around 37,000 new contracts per day since the service's launch in February 1999. Revenues from iMode are expected to reach $3.4bn for the year ending 31 March 2001, representing more than 50 per cent of DoCoMo's revenue growth. More than 828 companies currently provide information services through iMode, a 1,200 per cent increase on the 67 firms at the service's launch.
