US suffers from 3G spectrum shortage

The rollout of 3G networks in America will suffer because there is not enough spectrum available for wireless operators.

NEWS In two separate reports, the government had admitted that it's struggling to find enough spectrum to accommodate the demand for 3G. The problem has been exacerbated by the US Defense Department taking up airwaves that were initially penciled in for the new telecommunications technology. But US commerce secretary Donald Evans said in a statement: "We are committed to working together at the highest levels to meet the challenge of finding the spectrum needed." On Thursday of last week he met with heads of the wireless industry to inform them that despite the problem the government is endeavoring to find usable spectrum. The US government set itself a deadline of July this year to identify usable 3G spectrum with the intention of auctioning this from 30 September 2002.
