NEWS An Ericsson spokesman said: "There was something wrong with the settings so the standby and call time battery life wasn't long enough. It was not a hardware or a software problem." The problem only concerned a few thousand handsets, he said. "It was only in Sweden that they actually reached the resellers," he added, though some handsets could have been en route for other countries. Despite Ericsson's assertions, the news will certainly add to concerns that the long-awaited launch of GPRS technology is being held up by serious hardware problems. silicon.com has reported on a number of problems which have beset the existing BT Cellnet service, including billing concerns and quality of service issues. GRPS pioneer BT Cellnet forced Motorola to withdraw its first range of GPRS handsets because of a software problem, but the company was not able to comment on exactly what led to those withdrawals.
