NEWS UK company Cambridge Positioning Systems announced a deal with Lucent to deliver high-accuracy location information for mobile phone users. CPS's solution, Cursor, is based on the enhanced observed time difference system, which estimates a user's position by measuring the time a signal takes to travel from the handset to the base station. The system can locate users to within 75m 67 per cent of the time, with 150m accuracy 95 per cent of the time. CPS's Stephen Larder expects the service to be commercially available in European networks by the first half of 2002. In the US, government regulations oblige mobile operators to implement accurate positioning systems by 1 October 2001. CPS now has deals with Ericsson, Nortel and Siemens. Investors in the company include 3i, Argo Global Capital, Ericsson and Siemens.
