NEWS Concerns over the effect 3G base stations will have on the health of users is forcing the Italian government to rethink the roll-out of the service. Any move to restrict the coverage of the forthcoming mobile network will have a major impact on all licencees, most notably Vodafone which paid £1.6m in last October's auction. Vodafone, which operates in Italy through Omitel Pronto, will be examining the situation closely after the Italian government admitted it was concerned about the electromagnetic emissions levels base stations could give out, the Independent on Sunday reported yesterday. Because the Italians have stricter laws on these emissions than other European countries, the result could be a limit of one antenna between 15 and 40 miles of each other. The result would be severely restricted coverage in certain areas of the country, the paper claimed.
