TI to license ARM's v6

NEWS Texas Instruments (TI) has signed an agreement with chipmaker ARM to license and develop new devices based on ARM's v6 architecture. Connecting TI's programmable digital signal processors (DSPs) with ARM's v6 architecture will enable TI to deliver increased system performance and battery life for next-generation (2.5 and 3G) wireless handsets. In a statement ARM claimed the ARMv6 architecture enables high levels of integration between TI's DSP technology and ARM's microcontroller architecture. In a separate agreement, TI has licensed the ARM9E Jazelle extensions. According to ARM, these extensions improve performance of Java technology-based multimedia applications used in 2.5 and 3G wireless appliances. TI and ARM have a long history of collaboration in the wireless sector. TI has also licensed ARM cores, ARM7, ARM9 and ARM10 microprocessor families.
