NEWS German mobile internet firm T-Motion is set to charge its WAP portal users for premium services such as financial information and games, marking a major break in European tradition. Earlier this month both the BBC and The Times stepped up expectations that they would charge for online content but this is the first time a European firm has proposed charging for mobile content. While Europe has been reluctant to experiment with 'pay-per-view' on mobiles, NTT DoCoMo has successfully charged for content for sometime in Japan. T-Motion, owned by German telco Deutsche Telekom, is keen not to alienate existing users but believes charging for content is the only way it can achieve its target of profitability within 36 months of launch.
