NEWS The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and LT Mobile have signed an agreement to offer a weather alert service on mobile phones. FMI will provide meteorological information for LT Mobile's WeatherAlert service which warns users of rain, strong winds, poor air quality, forest fire and ultraviolet radiation in Finland. The WeatherAlert service is based on LT Mobile's location tracking system, which relies on the US software company BEA's middleware technology. Mobile users receive the alerts as SMS messages which are charged at 15p per alert. Juhana Kaipio, MD of LT Mobile, said weather reports may be the killer apps for mobile phones. The Finnish entrepreneur added the company has plans for rapid expansion. "We are currently looking into signing agreements with other European weather service providers," he said.
