Wap 2.0 launches to a chorus of yawns

'Who cares? Give us XML,' say comatose developers...

NEWS The Wap Forum has released a new version of the Wap standard, but with many of the features of the first version still to be implemented, it is unlikely to make much difference to end users. The new standard incorporates a relatively small range of new features, largely because most features have already appeared in previous versions of the standard. The range of different phones and browsers means that only the simplest applications can be guaranteed to work on all different Wap phones. For this reason, many features that have been available for years in earlier versions of Wap, such as the ability to "push" data to phones and some advanced security features, have never been implemented. The new standard also includes support for a range of internet protocols, preparing the way for the likely future of the Wap standard, namely being incorporated into XML. The future of the Wap is more likely to be boosted by the increasing availability of GPRS networks, and mobile operators deciding to charge for content.
