NEWS HP is set to launch two new handheld computers based on Microsoft's Merlin operating system. HP will release two models - high and low memory versions - using Intel-built ARM chips, according to a report on US newswire CNet. Merlin is the code name of Microsoft's latest version of its scaled down operating system - originally called Windows CE, now called Pocket PC - used in portable devices. CNet reports that Merlin is due for official launch on September 6th, and will then be given the official name Pocket PC 2002. Both HP and Microsoft today were unable to confirm or deny the details of the report. The news is the latest salvo in the ongoing battle for dominance in the handheld computer market. Microsoft has made great strides this year in taking market share off leading player Palm, which sells cheaper handhelds with less functionality.
