NEWS Japanese telco KDDI has pushed back the date when it will start offering 3G mobile phone services. The move is a further blow for the roll out of advanced mobile data services. The two other Japanese mobile operators - market leader NTT DoCoMo and third-placed J-Phone - have also announced delays. KDDI's mobile arm, Au, will now roll out 3G from 1 April 2002. DoCoMo, known internationally for the success of its narrowband i-mode mobile data service, is on track to achieve the world's first large-scale 3G roll out, from 1 October this year. Meanwhile, J-Phone, which the world's largest mobile operator Vodafone is set to take control of, has pushed back its 3G roll out to next summer. KDDI was formed last autumn out of the merger of Japanese telcos KDD and DDI.
