NEWS The operating system formerly known as Talisker, which shared its name with a Scottish whisky, will be called Windows CE .NET on its official launch. Bill Gates unveiled the new name for the next version of its slimmed down OS at the Professional Developers Conference 2001 in Los Angeles last night. Gates also announced the .NET Compact Framework, which Microsoft hopes will act as the basis for developers to build applications and web services for smart devices based on Windows CE .NET. According to Microsoft, Windows CE .NET will be the first embedded OS to support the .NET Compact Framework.
