NEWS US mobile phone companies are heading for a wave of mergers and acquisitions as the range of radio frequencies an operator can own in any given area is dramatically increased. Some carriers have been facing a shortfall of capacity under current regulations, which prohibits service providers from owning more than 45MHz in a city and 55MHz in rural areas. But a relaxation in spectrum ownership rules could prompt a wave of consolidation in the market, according to reports in the Financial Times.
