NEWS IBM is developing a range of supercomputers that it claims will run 15 times faster than today's fastest counterparts and be 15 times more power efficient. The main focus of the research is Blue Gene/L, a supercomputer expected to operate at approximately 200 teraflops (200 trillion operations per second) - larger than the total computing power of the top 500 supercomputers in the world today. Blue Gene/L will form a key part in Big Blue's "autonomic computing" initiative, which seeks to create self-healing, self-managing and self-configuring computer systems. The company also said that the supercomputers of tomorrow will fill commercial roles and not be limited to flights of academic endeavour. In a statement, IBM said mega-processor computers will be used for "distribution, simulations, and modeling, webserving, data mining or business intelligence" in the future. IBM is creating the machine in a joint venture with the US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Agency.
