NEWS Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is predicting that the 00ies will become the defining digital decade with IT boosting productivity at twice the rate of the previous 10 years. In his keynote speech at Comdex Las Vegas on Sunday, Gates acknowledged that the industry has rarely looked as shaky as it does now, but he said that won't stop IT transforming people's lives at home and at work. Gates' speech inevitably moved from economic optimism to shameless XP promotion. He claimed seven million licenses have already been sold since the October 25th launch, beating the firm's previous record - with the launch of Windows 95 - by three times. He also flagged up the gathering momentum behind the Tablet PC, with NEC, Tatung and ViewSonic joining Compaq, Acer, Fujitsu and Toshiba as official backers for the Microsoft software-based handheld.
