NEWS Microsoft has launched a version of its much trumpeted Windows XP operating system for embedded Intel-based computers in everything from supermarket tills and thin clients through to microwave ovens. Windows NT4 Embedded - which was released back in 1999 - will now be discontinued. The major difference between XP Embedded and the NT4 version is that the new software is broken down into far smaller components. XP breaks down into 10,000 different functions, whereas the NT version featured only 250. That allows developers to be far more selective of the functionality they want to integrate into the client, so keeping it as lightweight as possible. According to Microsoft, the minimum configuration of XP Embedded is 4.8MB.
