Cingular living on the Edge

Siemens wins contract to roll out the 'poor man's 3G'...

By Heather McLean, 5 December 2001 12:35

NEWS Cingular Wireless has become the first company in the US to upgrade its network to Edge technology. Siemens' IC Mobile has agreed to deliver and implement the mobile network infrastructure over the next three years to replace Cingular's time division multiple access (TDMA) network. The deal is worth $500m and gives Siemens a valuable foothold in the US. Siemens will provide its total network infrastructure that supports GSM, GPRS and Edge and will also supply GSM and TDMA dual technology mobile phones, so Cingular's customers have the use of both networks. Edge and GPRS combined provide data rates of up to 348Kbps, making it a useful technology for operators without 3G licences.
