NEWS The government has asked mobile phone companies to act upon the spiralling rates of handset theft by creating better security measures. The recent wave of mobile phone crime, particularly among youths, has pushed a Whitehall official to call for more investment into mobile phone security. Suggestions from the government include introducing unique identity numbers into mobile phones. However, the official claimed some companies are holding back from further security investment for reasons of cost as they await the rollout of next generation handsets.
