Orange takes the market by storm

NEWS Orange reported strong growth in its core UK and French markets in 2001 with other global markets also performing well. Worldwide the company's customer base grew to 39.3 million - up 8.8 million, or 20 per cent, on 2000. In France, the company secured its market leadership by sweeping up 48 per cent of all market share growth, growing its customer base by 3.5 million and bringing its net total to 17.8 million. Revenues peaked at E6.9bn (£4.2m), up 21 per cent on 2000. In the UK, Orange now leads the mobile market with a customer base of 12.4 million - having attracted 2.6 million new subscribers during 2001. Revenues grew 27 per cent on 2000 to E5.34bn (£3.26bn). In the rest of the world, Orange added 2.7 million active customers bringing the mobile operator's combined customer base to 9.1 million outside the French and UK markets. Graham Howe, deputy CEO and CFO for Orange, said in a statement: "This is yet another strong operating performance from Orange, meeting our expectations and further strengthening Orange's leading position."
