Verizon gets legal over wireless licences

Lawyers go into battle...

NEWS Verizon is to sue the US communications regulator in a bid to avoid paying for $16bn worth of radio spectrum licences. The US mobile phone operator claims it's losing $250,000 a day because the Federal Communications Commission is not paying interest on a $1.7bn downpayment for the wireless licences. Verizon has been unable to use the spectrum because of a protracted legal dispute, and is now seeking to escape from its obligations altogether. An earlier settlement, which would have delayed the licence award and payments for a year, was rejected by Congress.
