NEWS Mobile phone sales around the world have fallen for the first time. Gartner Dataquest figures released today show that worldwide mobile phone sales in 2001 fell by 3.2 per cent on the previous year. Between 1996 and 2000, sales were growing at 60 per cent per year. However, 2001 saw sales fall as prepaid subsidies were removed in high-growth markets such as western Europe and Latin America. A stack of unsold inventory in Q4 of 2000 also affected sales in 2001. Nokia still managed to extend its lead over the competition. Its market share grew from 30.6 per cent in 2000 to 35 per cent in 2001.
