Vodafone faces Chinese assault

But it's not all bad for the UK operator...

NEWS China Mobile is hot on the heels of Vodafone to become the world's most popular mobile operator, announcing a massive 54 per cent increase in its subscriber base. The 2001 increase takes the total number of subscribers to 69.9 million, still some way off Vodafone's 93.1 million. There are signs, however, that Vodafone's growth is slowing. The UK operator gained 2.5 million new customers during the three months to September 2001, compared with three million and 4.4 million respectively for the previous two quarters.
