NEWS Palm has hauled itself back into the black following a year of losses and upheaval. It has posted a fiscal second quarter profit of $2.9m, up from a loss of $1.9m for the corresponding period last year and $25.2m in the preceding quarter. Revenue for the latest period was $292.7m, down 38 per cent year-on-year, with $19.5m coming from the company's PalmSource subsidiary. It is the first time the unit which licenses the Palm OS has had a separate line on the balance sheet. The handheld company forecast Q3 revenues of between $290m and $300m and said the market is growing again this year. Despite inroads made by Handspring and manufacturers using the Microsoft PocketPC operating system, Palms remain the most popular PDAs.
