'Digital coalition' could ease sector crisis...

NEWS The BBC and ITV are returning to the table to continue discussions over a 'digital coalition' which could revitalise the ailing digital TV sector. The woes of ITV Digital have been well recorded in recent weeks, with a high-profile spat with the Football League threatening the very existence of the company. Parent companies Granada and Carlton have pumped in excess of £800m into the venture but it has underperformed in a market dominated by Sky. Now the company is looking at recovery plans and, according to the Financial Times, the BBC is once more entering discussions. The Beeb's plan is to provide free digital television, available through a cheap set-top box. The offering would be complemented by primary and premium channels currently available through ITV Digital and BSkyB.
