AMD flash chips just got flashier

Streaming video on your mobile...

NEWS AMD is set to release a range of improved flash memory chips that can double the memory of mobile phones and other handheld devices without increasing costs, according to the company. The company and its partner Fujitsu have come up with a new way to process flash chips, called MirrorBit technology, which stretches the memory space and makes the manufacture more efficient. Flash chips retain data when a device is turned off. In mobile phones they control phone number storage and in handheld computers they store programming code, such as an operating system. The enhanced chips could make it easier for manufacturers to enhance the services available over mobile phones, such as streaming video and audio. The company said it will begin making the chips before the end of June.
