Fresh fears over handset radiation

Do mobiles break 'blood-brain barrier'?

NEWS The radiation emitted by mobile phones has the potential to break down the 'blood-brain barrier' which is there to ensure toxins circulating the blood do not enter brain cells, a report published this month has revealed. The report is part of a two-year study by the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority and was carried out by Professor Dariusz Leszczynski. Professor Leszczynski stressed that the findings did not prove that mobiles were unsafe but said the link between handset radiation and damaged human brain cells was worth exploring further. It is a commonly held misconception that microwaves from handsets 'cook' brain cells. This research does suggest, however, that microwaves can cause important - and potentially - damaging changes to the cells. Professor Leszczynski said he would continue to use his own mobile phone.
