Hutchison says 'Expect 3G glitches'

2G to blame...

NEWS The problem of handling UMTS-based phone calls over older generation networks is likely to mean glitch-free 3G services won't be available from Hutchison 3G until next summer. Hutchison is anxiously searching for a solution to this issue, aware that 3G will only be commercially viable if it proves 'backward compatible'. Initially, third generation network coverage will not be nationwide so user will expect to be able to roam on 2G networks where necessary. Despite the technical problems Hutchison still intends to roll out services by Christmas. A spokesman told the Sunday Times: "It's not a problem. We don't see it as a big issue... that would stop us offering services this year."
