Now Nokia wants a piece of RIM

First Handspring, then Palm - now the mighty Finn...

NEWS Mobile phone giant Nokia is to license some of the software behind Research In Motion's BlackBerry devices. The deal will let Nokia use and distribute certain BlackBerry technology, including wireless email, on a global basis. The pact completes a licensing hat-trick for RIM this week; the company also inked deals with Palm and Handspring. Financial details behind the Nokia deal were not released. Nokia also did not say when the new technology will show up in its products. The BlackBerry emailer is popular in the corporate world because it lets people send and receive email via a wireless device. Nokia pointed to this as a reason behind the deal. Erik Anderson, senior vice president of Nokia Mobile Phones, said in a release: "By signing this software licensing deal with RIM, we are able to provide another compelling option for mobile professionals to manage their e-mail while on the move." RIM has been trying to reach out to a broader global market, recently announcing new devices that can work on next-generation networks in Europe, Asia and North America. The deal with Nokia, the world's largest cell phone maker, should help that goal as well. Margaret Kane writes for News.com
