Food inspectors get text alerts

Health warnings on a plate

NEWS A pilot text message scheme run by the Food Standards Agency to keep inspectors in the field informed of health alerts will be expanded after proving a big hit. The number of food hazard warnings is on the up and the latest research shows Food Enforcement Officers, employed by local authorities, prefer the SMS text alerts to faxes or other electronic messages. So far over 500 are using the service across the UK. Most alerts are in conjunction with product withdrawal or recall by manufacturers, retailers or distributors.
