Fujitsu to start shipping 3G Symbian handsets to DoCoMo

Progress out east

NEWS Fujitsu is to start shipping 3G smart phones based on the Symbian operating system to NTT DoCoMo, the companies announced today. The products will include a still and moving image camera, email capability and PDA-like record keeping. Fujitsu said volume shipments for DoCoMo's FOMA 3G network will begin "shortly". The partnership was first announced just over a year ago and has seen the companies work closely on products aimed specifically at the Japanese market. For example, they have created a Symbian user interface in Japanese. Other Japanese vendors to have licensed the Symbian OS include Kenwood, Panasonic, Sanyo and Sony. Matsushita is also a Symbian stakeholder, in addition to mobile handset giants Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and UK company Psion.
