STMicroelectronics and TI happy with OMAPI

New standard to aid mobile development

NEWS STMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments have launched an initiative which they hope will make it easier to develop software and hardware to work with mobile devices. The OMAPI standard - short for Open Mobile Application Processor Interfaces - intends to marry TI's successful OMAP chip platform with software interfaces for operating systems and hardware. The idea is that advances will more rapidly be made to 2.5G and 3G mobile phones and services, as well as to handheld computers. Many such devices run on a TI OMAP chip. ST was the natural partner for TI, the Dallas-based company said, because it is the number one supplier of digital multimedia processing chips and has expertise in low-power system-on-chip (SoC) design. Further details of the standard are expected during the first quarter of next year.
