Coming soon: The mobile phone that shows you where you are

Which is more useful than you'd think. Just ask the network operators...

NEWS UK mobile phone owners are willing to pay for maps delivered to handsets, a desire which could generate around £150m every year for operators. That finding, based on a survey carried out by Ipsos RSA for e-mapping company m-spatial, is bound to hearten mobile operators, all of whom hope location-based services (LBS) and richer content over third-generation handsets will be popular. The research found three-quarters of the sample, aged 18-44, would prefer digital maps to thumbing through an A-Z, and 59 per cent would be willing to pay 50p per use. m-spatial points out the acceptance of such maps is also promising for related LBS offerings that rely on 'Where's my nearest...' applications.
