NEWS Popular peer-to-peer music download service Kazaa will now offer mobile phone ringtones through its site, it was announced yesterday.

Kazaa's 60 million users will be able to choose from more than 3,500 European and US chart tunes for their mobiles, depending on their handset and home country, and will be able to pay for the ditties via SMS or their credit card.

The ringtones will be available to users with GSM phones, as well as those with handsets that work on other standards such as CDMA. Those with a hankering for some monophonic melodies or polyphonic pop hits can find the service on Kazaa's website under the Ringtone Channel.

The company providing the ringtones is UK-based The Music Solution, while Netsize will handle the delivery and billing.

The ringtones market is increasingly catching the eye of those in the music industry, with the Mobile Data Association predicting that sales will outstrip those of CD singles and ringtone piracy in Asia booming.
