Tiptop day for hiptop play

NEWS Danger, maker of hiptop mobile communications devices, has raised $37m in additional VC funding. It has also announced a major partnership with Sharp.

The Series D round was led by Mobius Venture Capital, Redpoint Ventures and Softbank Capital Partners and brought in Institutional Venture Partners and Adams Street Partners. Due to the round being oversubscribed, Danger said it accepted more money.

The Palo Alto, California-based company said it will use the funds to develop operator partnerships. Danger is known for working with T-Mobile but also now has relationships with seven other companies including Cable and Wireless in the Cayman Islands, EPlus in Germany, One in Austria and Starhub in Singapore.

Hiptop devices - as their name suggests, larger than most phones but easy to carry on a waist belt - incorporate an innovative flip-around screen and Java technology and have made some waves without yet storming the market.

The agreement with Japan's Sharp will see developments in Europe and North America based around Danger's reference designs and hosted client-server technology.

Sharp is already a player in the PDA and mobile phone marketplace, notably trying several different operating systems including Linux, and it is already the supplier of LCD screens for hiptop devices.
