Dot-mobi: Follow operator code or you don't get a URL

It's all about best practices...

NEWS mTLD, the top-level domain operator for dot-mobi websites, has stipulated that anyone wanting to register for a URL must abide by a code of best practices.

mTLD announced today that it has joined the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and will be using many of the consortium's best practices, developed for the mobile internet, to develop its own criteria in order to ensure dot-mobi sites are optimised to be viewed on mobile devices.

Dot-mobi will be the first top-level domain to require its customers to stick to rules on how their users' websites are developed.

Dot-mobi domain names are expected to become available from early 2006, with trademark holders the first to be allowed to register for URLs.

mTLD officially won the right to administer the dot-mobi domain in July from Icann - the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - and recently appointed former VeriSign staffer Neil Edwards as its general manager.
