Qualcomm has announced the first partner for the launch of its TV 'multicast' network in the US.
Verizon Wireless will be the first operator to offer TV to its mobile subscribers using Qualcomm's MediaFLO technology.
Qualcomm's network, due to go live in 2006, will provide mobile TV to 3G subscribers in half of Verizon Wireless' markets.
Qualcomm's rollout of MediaFLO will pit it against the likes of Nokia, which has thrown its weight behind the competing DVB-H standard.
Analysts' opinions on mobile TV have so far been mixed, with one report claiming that 70 per cent of consumers will shun the technology.
A recent silicon.com reader poll was more clear cut in disparaging mobile TV: three-quarters of the 489 respondents said that even if the content were good, they would not watch TV on a mobile phone.
