Four UK IT companies have been named 'worldwide pioneers of technology' for their contribution to the mobility industry.

The firms were four of 36 companies chosen for their excellence in health, energy, photographic and computer technology by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

One of the companies chosen was MobileATM, which sells mobile phone ATM services to 20 banks. Bank statements and mobile phone top-ups are the first such services to be offered by Link, the cash machine operator, which has partnered with the banks.

European wireless provider the Cloud was also listed. The company offers wi-fi coverage in hotspot locations across Europe.

Icera, a wireless platform manufacturer, and Tao Group, which develops middleware for mobile devices, were also selected.

The United Kingdom boasted eight winners in total, including a hydrogen-powered motorbike manufacturer and a stem cell medical research firm.

The 2006 technology pioneers event is hosted in Davos, Switzerland.
